Top news and newsmaker of 2023 - it's your call

POLL | Every year, at the end of December, Malaysiakini readers traditionally get to pick what they think has been the hottest news item of the year.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s coalition government has just navigated its first year in power and aside from providing stability, it has to contend with reviving an economy that took a strong hit due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

In recent months, the tragic loss of innocent civilian lives over the Gaza conflict has come to symbolise an increasingly polarised world we are living in.

As with previous years, we are letting Malaysiakini readers decide on the top 10 headline-grabbers for 2023. There are 25 major news items listed, in alphabetical order, for this year’s vote.

Voting is done by scoring each item from 0 to 10, with 0 being the lowest and 10 the highest. You can give the same score for more than one item.

Go ahead. Take one last look at the year that has been, before we move on to, hopefully, a better and brighter 2024.

Newsmaker of the Year

Don’t forget to also vote for the “Newsmaker of the Year”.

A quick recap: a newsmaker does not necessarily have to be the most popular individual.

He or she is one whose actions consistently make news headlines and, in doing so, affect public discourse and impact Malaysian life - for better or worse.

We have selected 15 newsmaker candidates for you to pick. Again, you can give the same score to more than one individual.

Voting ends at midnight, Dec 23, and the results will be announced over two consecutive days beginning Dec 29.
