In its absence lies a network of sign language interpreters. Most of us have seen their work at state-sponsored television, public events and most recently, at political rallies.
This was where Malaysiakini discovered the work of sign language interpreters Lucy Lim and Jonah Ong - who were following Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh on the campaign trail during the 15th general election (GE15).
