Covid-19 (Aug 17): 3,516 new cases, 15 deaths

COVID-19 | The Health Ministry reported 3,516 new daily Covid-19 cases yesterday.

Active cases currently stood at 41,701, down 12.2 percent compared to 14 days ago.

However, the number of patients in intensive care is on the rise.

New cases according to states are as follows:

Another 15 deaths attributed to Covid-19 were reported yesterday, of which four were declared as "brought in dead".

This is the highest number of deaths reported in a single day since April 20.

The deaths were reported in Johor (4), Malacca (3), Perak (3), Sabah (2), Pahang (1), Sarawak (1) and Selangor (1).

Over the past week, an average of 8.7 people were reported to have died of Covid-19, while the average for the past 30 days was 8.5, indicating that Covid-19 deaths are on the uptrend.

Since the start of the pandemic in March 2020, a total of 36,117 deaths have been attributed to Covid-19.

There have been 148 reported Covid-19 deaths this month. For comparison, there were 204 deaths last month and 89 deaths in June.

There are 1,534 Covid-19 patients hospitalised, of which 92 are in intensive care.

The number of Covid-19 patients in intensive care has not been this high since April 22.

However, the Health Ministry’s CovidNow website reported that dedicated Covid-19 ICU bed utilisation is still at only 24.7 percent.

The highest number of admissions yesterday was recorded in Selangor (138), followed by Sabah (93) and Johor (59).
