Covid-19 (March 10): 30,787 new cases, 70 deaths

COVID-19 | The Health Ministry said 30,787 new daily Covid-19 cases was reported yesterday, bringing the total cumulative cases to 3,741,986.

Active cases currently stood at 314,421, up 6.9 percent compared to 14 days ago.

As of two days ago, the R-number for Malaysia was 1.06. A R-number of more than 1.00 indicates that the spread of Covid-19 was accelerating.

However, the R-number is below 1.00 in Sabah, Johor, Kelantan, Labuan and Perlis.

Another 70 deaths attributed to Covid-19 was reported yesterday, of which 19 was declared as 'brought in dead'.

Over the past week, an average of 77 people were reported to have died of Covid-19, while the average for the past 30 days was 50.4, indicating that Covid-19 deaths are on the uptrend.

There has been 818 reported Covid-19 deaths this month alone, more than the entire month of February (771).

Since the start of the pandemic in March 2020, a total of 33,567 deaths have been attributed to Covid-19.

Malaysia has the highest number of deaths per capita in the Asean and East Asian regions with 997 deaths per 1 million population, and fourth-worst in Asia after Iran, Lebanon and Jordan – all in the Middle East.

The highest number of deaths was reported in Perak (20) followed by Selangor (11), Johor (10), Kelantan (9), Kedah (7), Negeri Sembilan (4), Sabah (4), Pahang (3), Perlis (1) and Terengganu (1).

There are 8,750 Covid-19 patients who are hospitalised of which 389 are in intensive care.

The number of patients in hospital due to Covid-19 is at a three months high. However, the number of patients in intensive care is growing at a slower rate.
