Covid-19 deaths (Feb 12): 24 reported fatalities, total at 32,099

COVID-19 | The Health Ministry reported a total of 24 new Covid-19 fatalities yesterday (Feb 11), bringing the cumulative death toll to 32,099.

Malaysia has the highest number of deaths per capita in the Asean and East Asian regions with 969 deaths per one million population.

From the newly reported deaths yesterday, 37.5 percent or nine died before they could receive treatment at a hospital.

Kedah recorded the highest number of new deaths at five, making up 20.8 percent of the newly reported fatalities.

The remaining deaths were in Johor (4), Sabah (4), Pahang (3), Perak (3), Negeri Sembilan (2), Perlis (1), Selangor (1) and Terengganu (1).

No new deaths were reported in Kelantan, Malacca, Penang, Sarawak, Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya.

Deaths rising

An average of 12 Covid-19 deaths was reported daily in the last 30 days compared to the seven-day average of 13, indicating an upward trend.

To date, 496 Covid-19 deaths have been reported this month.

As of yesterday, there were 122,991 active Covid-19 cases. This is an increase of 94.0 percent from the 63,395 active infections a week ago.

Compared to 30 days ago, the number of active cases has increased by 208.3 percent from 39,896.

From the 20,939 new cases yesterday, a total of 740 of them could be traced to ongoing Covid-19 clusters.

From the cluster-linked cases, 449 (60.7 percent) were from education institutions while 238 (32.2 percent) were from workplaces.

The remaining cases were traced to clusters related to high-risk groups such as old folks homes (22 - 3.0 percent), detention centres (15 - 2.0 percent), community transmissions (10 - 1.4 percent) and religious events (6 - 0.8 percent).
