Covid-19 (July 23): Record high 15,573 new daily cases

The Health Ministry today said 15,573 new Covid-19 cases that were reported over a 24-hour period.

This is the highest number of daily cases reported so far. The number of active Covid-19 cases are also at a record high.

The amount of samples in the 24-hour period taken as of noon today was 137,326. This amounts to an unofficial positivity rate of 11.34 percent. This figure has been in double digits for four last five days.

Selangor (7,672), Kuala Lumpur (2,063), Kedah (937) and Penang (530) all reported record numbers.

Apart from Perlis, there are no regions in the country which fulfil requirements for Phase 2 of the National Recovery Plan.

As of yesterday, the R-naught is currently 1.07 for the entire country. This figure has been dropping since reaching a recent high of 1.20 on July 15. An R-naught of 1.07 suggests that the spread of Covid-19 was accelerating.

Regions with the highest R-naught value are Terengganu (1.44), Kedah (1.22) and Putrajaya (1.22).

Deaths

The Health Ministry said another 144 people have died due to Covid-19. The national death toll has reached  7,718.

Selangor (66) reported the most deaths followed by Kuala Lumpur (16), Johor (15), Malacca (13), Negeri Sembilan (10), Pahang (8), Kedah (6), Sarawak (3), Perak (2), Penang (2), Sabah (1), Terengganu (1) and Labuan (1).

Clusters

The Health Ministry is currently monitoring 958 active Covid-19 clusters.

Another 30 were classified today. Worryingly, 16 of these clusters were related to community spread while seven were related to workplaces.
