Covid-19 (May 12): 4,765 new cases, new record with 39 deaths

COVID-19 | Malaysia has recorded 4,765 new Covid-19 cases today, which is the highest number recorded in over three months.

Likewise, cases in Selangor also reached a three-month high today with 2,082 new cases recorded. Overall, Klang Valley cases make up 55.2 percent (2,626) of total cases.

The last time cases were higher than today - both at the national-level and the Selangor-level - was on Jan 31. At the time, the country recorded 5,298 cases, of which 2,460 cases were in Selangor.

The new cases bring the cumulative total to 453,222 cases.

Meanwhile, 39 deaths have been reported today, marking a new all-time high. The previous record was 26 deaths reported on Sunday.

In a Facebook post, Health Ministry director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah warned that the situation could deteriorate further.

"It could exceed 5,000 cases in the middle of the month during the festive season," he said, referring to the Hari Raya Aidilfitri holidays that start tomorrow.

Deaths

The 39 fatalities today bring the death toll to 1,761.

The new deaths were recorded in Johor (10), Kuala Lumpur (8), Selangor (5), Sabah (3), Pahang (2), Sarawak (2), Kedah (2), Kelantan (2), Negeri Sembilan (1), Terengganu (1), Putrajaya (1), Perak (1) and Malacca (1).

Those who died were aged between 43 and 88.

Three of the deceased have no history of chronic illness, and another three have already passed away when brought to a hospital.
