Another pro-Anwar group denies calling for rally

The Anwar Ibrahim Club has denied calling for a rally this afternoon to support PKR president Anwar Ibrahim's bid for the premiership.

In a statement today, the group's secretary Azmi Mohd Nor said it was not involved in any form of rallies.

"This is a malicious slander designed to taint Anwar's (above) good name," said Azmi.

The fake notice had called for supporters to prepare for "Reformasi 2020".

They were told to gather at the Sogo shopping centre before marching to the National Mosque for prayers and speeches by Abdul Razak Ismail, Ezam Mohd Nor, Fariz Musa and Selayang MP William Leong.

Abdul Razak and Ezam both played key roles in the reformasi movement when it burst out during the late 90s.

This is the second fake notice calling for a rally to support Anwar since Friday when Pakatan Harapan's top brass gathered to discuss the coalition's transition plans.

Eventually, it was decided that Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad will have the final say on when to retire.

This was a departure from Mahathir's earlier pledge to step down after "two years" or sometimes "three years" to make way for Anwar.

Pressure has been mounting on Mahathir to step aside after Harapan suffered a string of by-election losses.

Adding to the pressure is the fact that Mahathir's party Bersatu is the only Harapan component which has lost ground, failing to retain its seats during the by-elections for Semenyih and Tanjung Piai last year.
