Jamal mulls no-confidence vote against S'gor Umno chief - report
Selangor Umno is mulling selling its Shah Alam headquarters but is facing resistance from several division chiefs, The Malaysian Insight (TMI) reported today.
Among those opposed to the move is Sungai Besar Umno division chief Jamal Md Yunos.
“The building symbolises our presence here.
“We say we want to capture Selangor back from Pakatan Harapan but we will betray this principle if we sell the building,” Jamal was quoted as saying by TMI.
Others who are reportedly against the sale are Umno’s Puchong and Hulu Langat division chiefs Satim Diman and Johan Abd Aziz.
Jamal vowed to move a no-confidence vote against Selangor Umno liaison chief Nadzari Ahmad Dahlan if the building was indeed sold.
“If this goes ahead, I will make sure he (Nadzari) will be replaced because he is not fit to lead,” he told the news website.
It was previously reported that Nadzari (above) faced a boycott from a majority of Umno division leaders in the state.
Rather than sell the Shah Alam Umno headquarters, Jamal suggested that issues with the former ruling party’s finances be resolved by selling less symbolic buildings owned by the state chapter.
“Sell other assets with no Umno logo on it. Selangor Umno members will not approve of the sale of our building,” he said, adding that divisions could also contribute money to cover the maintenance costs of the headquarters.
MACC froze Selangor Umno’s accounts in June 2018 following a large-scale probe into beleaguered sovereign wealth fund 1MDB.
The fund is now subject to several forfeiture suits as well as criminal trials involving former Umno president and former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak.
In the TMI report, an anonymous Selangor division chief was quoted as saying that Umno had already decided to sell the nine-storey Shah Alam tower in order to fund operations.
The chapter will continue to operate from several floors in the building, the source told the news portal.
