Ministry looking at new ways to curb road tax renewal leakages
The Transport Ministry is studying new initiatives, including using existing ICT systems, to process motor vehicle licences, which is allegedly suffering from leakages.
Anthony Loke said his ministry is also holding discussions with the Road Transport Department (RTD) to ensure the mechanism selected would not burden the people, especially those living in rural areas.
“We will look at other initiatives, such as the integration of the Customs' information system with the MySIKAP information system, as well as amendments to tighten laws to conduct enforcement and prosecution on vehicle owners who renew their road tax outside their registration areas," he told a press conference in Putrajaya today.
Loke said the matter was still being studied by a special task force set up by the RTD and the ministry, while ensuring that the leakages would be combated without burdening drivers.
Yesterday, RTD revealed that leakages in revenue collection from road tax renewals exceeded RM50 million from January to August.
More than 50 percent of renewals in Sabah, Sarawak, Labuan and Langkawi involved vehicles registered and used outside of said areas.
“While we are still studying the platform to renew road tax, such transactions can still be carried out as usual,” the minister said.
