'Khat' rage: DAP rep meets man who pelted service centre with eggs

Menglembu assemblyperson Steven Chaw met the incensed father who threw eggs at his service centre to protest Putrajaya's decision to introduce khat (Jawi calligraphy) into the syllabus for vernacular schools.

The DAP lawmaker said he met the man at the Kampung Tawas police station after the latter was released from custody at about 1.45am, and the two of them had a frank 30-minute discussion.

"I take note of (the man's) concerns... I will not take any further action on this incident (throwing eggs at Chaw's service centre).

"DAP is always prepared to hear the opinions of the rakyat and our doors are always open.

"We will continue our efforts to provide the best service to the rakyat and the country," he said, adding that his officer's police report against the assailant has been withdrawn.

The man was arrested after a video of him throwing an entire tray of 30 eggs was widely shared on the internet.

In the video, the man accused DAP of "betraying the Chinese" and "exterminating Chinese education."

He then pelted Chaw's office with eggs while shouting expletives in Cantonese. At one point, his daughter could be heard urging him to leave.

It is believed that the assailant was referring to Putrajaya's plans to introduce khat into the Year 4 Bahasa Malaysia syllabus.

Previously, Education Minister Maszlee Malik said the move was not aimed at "establishing Islamisation in vernacular schools."

In addition to fostering a beautiful writing style, Maszlee also said the introduction of khat would enable students to recognise the country's heritage and identity.
