Taps go dry hours after water supply resumes following new incident

Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Syabas) has again been forced to shut down four water treatment plants supplying water to the Klang Valley due to diesel contamination of raw water at Sungai Selangor.

This comes just a day after operations at the water treatment plants were restored following odour pollution suspected to be discharge from workshops near Sungai Liam in Batang Kali.

Syabas said the latest pollution incident caused the Sungai Selangor Phase 1, 2, 3 and Rantau Panjang water treatment plants to be shut down from 6 pm onwards.

"We have reported the contamination incident to the authorities and found the source of pollution to be from sand dredging works upstream.

"For information, this is the second incident within three days involving the shutdown of four main water treatment plants resulting in a large-scale unscheduled interruption to customers," it said in a press statement.

It added that there was no time frame for when water will be fully restored again.

More than a million households were affected by the water cut on Friday and while the water treatment plants became operational yesterday, water was only fully restored to all customers today.

However, the taps had to be turned off again today within hours of full water supply resumption due to the latest incident.
