Medical student apologises over sexist, racist rant
Aspiring doctor Kiren Raj (above) has apologised for making sexist and racist remarks online which has triggered widespread condemnation and a police report.
Kiren, 27, apologised publicly during an event organised by MCA public complaints bureau head Michael Chong.
"I never meant to cause harm. Please forgive me. Moreover, I never meant to be derogatory to women. Women have contributed a lot to society.
"We must always treat them respectfully. I am so sorry that I was ignorant in making those comments," he said.
Kiren also brought his palms together and bowed before the press.
Following the death of actress Emily Kong in a road accident on March 9, Kiren had shared his thoughts on the matter through Facebook and was widely condemned as being sexist and racist.
He also opined that doctors had a right to turn away patients based on their sexual orientation.
His school, the International Medical University (IMU), has barred Kiren from attending class pending an internal inquiry. The institution has also sent him for a medical evaluation and behavioural counselling.
During the event today, Kiren was accompanied by lawyers K Kumaraendran and Teh See Khoon.
Kumaraendran is a prominent lawyer. During the event, he said he was related to Kiren.
