LETTER | Instil and inculcate road safety culture

LETTER | Public roads and highways are not racing circuits or test-drive tracks. There is a growing and worrying trend happening where some drivers and riders, not only race with one another but drive dangerously or intentionally test their machines on public roads.

The act is a blatant disregard for safety, irresponsible, selfish and endangers everyone’s lives.

These selfish individuals commit their acts regardless of whether it's in the light of day or the still of night and manoeuvre their machines in a manner that would put movies to shame. To make matters worse, they upload their dangerous acts on social media. Please stop this nonsense.

The right road safety culture must be practised and embraced. Safe and defensive driving or riding, coupled with the right mentality must be instilled and inculcated.

Spare a thought for the safety of the general public, this includes individuals, parents, children and families, who have no interest whatsoever in these reckless displays of pure danger.

Having a fast and powerful vehicle, regardless of whether it’s two wheels or four, does not give anyone the license to drive or ride recklessly. There are no two ways about it, aggressive driving will most probably result in harm.

Lives have already been lost due to drivers who drive under the influence of drugs and alcohol. I strongly urge these irresponsible drivers to stop their dangerous and selfish acts. Repent when there is still time. Do not wait until there is blood on your hands before you come to your senses.

The police, enforcement and medical personnel, have their plates full in emergency cases. Please do not add to their burden.

Do not endanger the lives of other road users and yourself. Be a safe, responsible and courteous driver.
