LETTER | Political leaders must engage in debate

LETTER | Usually, in any election, incumbents would not challenge their opponents to debates especially on hardcore issues such as economic growth or performance.

So far, the narratives that are being thrown around by various political parties are inordinate and insignificant. Claims and counter claims were made, but no one is getting wiser.

I guess politicians can indulge in useless polemics simply because Malaysians in general are not concerned with issues that matter. We are happy just to hear them making speeches insulting, attacking, and belittling each other as if by doing so, it would put food on the table and improve Malaysia’s future.

Hence, I am happy to hear that Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli has issued a challenge to debate with former senior minister (Economy cluster) Azmin Ali or caretaker Kedah menteri besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor on economic issues.

Democracy is about competing ideas to bring this country forward. I think it is about time Malaysians switch their focus on issues that matter rather than on polemics that waste time.

Rafizi is willing to take the risk to go on national TV to debate with his equally eloquent opponents. I hope either Azmin or Sanusi will accept the challenge.

Most of us can make beautiful speeches or make sharp criticisms when we are not subjected to questions or counter arguments. However, when it comes to debate, it is different altogether. The opponent can easily detect inconsistency or incoherence in any idea.

The proof of the pudding is in the eating. Since Rafizi is willing and has issued the challenge to Azmin and Sanusi to a debate, I guess the latter must accept.

We can all say something we don’t really understand or believe. However, when it comes to debate, it is difficult to camouflage our inadequacy or incompetency.

Debates will bring out the best in a person’s ideas, his thinking process, and his ability to handle objections and counter arguments.

As an ordinary Malaysian, I yearn for national debates among leaders of different political leanings. Debate is not about oratory skill; it is about ideas, intelligence, and ability to think holistically.

We are waiting.
