LETTER | Arrest on sight to permanently change road safety equation

LETTER | Anyone who frequently uses our highways will easily be able to point out the failures to enhance road safety. You do not need ‘experts’ to conduct studies.

Of the many causes of road accidents and fatalities are three dangerous habits that must be arrested without more delays.

One, a common habit among motorists is tail-gating at high speeds.

Two, buses and lorries do not observe the mandated minimum distance when behind vehicles. Many of them can be seen abruptly overtaking barely five to 10 feet behind another lorry or bus.

Third, overtaking at high speeds from the left has become a common practice too among motorists.

The above dangerous habits must be put to an end immediately. And it can be done very effectively with just over several months of strict enforcement.

It is time to enforce an arrest-on-sight, be detained, and get charged in court with a hefty compound for repeat offenders thrown in.

That should discipline errant, bullying, careless, and stubborn motorists for good and even permanently.

It is the role and responsibility of any good government to make our roads safer. Period.

If the existing traffic laws are inadequate then corrective measures can easily be implemented within one parliamentary sitting.

But somehow, our efforts to make our roads safer and create disciplined motorists are very much lacking and they get away with excuses and denials all the time.

Hopefully, Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob will address this fast-eroding safety standard on our roadways thereby giving greater meaning to his ‘Keluarga Malaysia’.
