LETTER | Media Solidarity Awards return after Covid-19 hiatus

LETTER | It has been more than two years since the Covid-19 pandemic, and journalists and media workers remain committed to our duties.

Even in times of economic challenge due to the current global situation, Malaysia continues to sustain and in fact, there have been an increasing number of media companies set up to inform and enlighten the people - a must in any functioning democracy.

Too often, journalists, photographers and even general media workers are criticised by the public. More so in the era of social media where unfiltered opinions can be shared with just one click.

To those who live by journalism ethics in the name of truth, we salute you. Undeniably there are criticisms that hit closer to home and can be adapted to improve how the media gathers, writes and publish news.

Malaysia has a long history of producing brave, competent and ethical journalists. Names like Pak Sako and Abdul Rahim Kajai are testaments that journalists do not exist to serve politicians but rather contribute to the larger national struggle.

There is certainly truth in the stereotype that journalists possess critical, objective and mature thinking skills, helping the public to understand matters as complex as the Covid-19 virus.

Geramm believes that choosing a career as a journalist is not a matter to be taken lightly. The value of quality journalism must be placed on actual analysis and news value, from a view focused on its objectivity.

A journalist is not a tool to be used by anyone seeking personal gain. Instead, the media has a role to function as a force of check and balance, speaking up to power in the interest of the people, more so as Malaysia once again gears towards a general election.

On this occasion, we would like to announce the return of our annual event to be held at the end of this month.
