LETTER | Seriously, you name it, we have it
As far as I know, anything and everything that is needed to make Malaysia a progressive, dynamic and united society have been mentioned, discussed, and debated before.
But today, that dream has remained elusive and unreachable. In fact, in many aspects, they have regressed.
We said we want to revamp our education to make it a unifying tool for our diverse people.
We said we want to make it competitive so that the nation will continue to avail itself with competent and resourceful manpower.
In fact, this morning I read the same lamentation by a constitutional law expert on this again.
So what exactly is happening in our education system?
Did we not have numerous studies, blueprints and revamps over the years undertaken by different ministers of education?
But have we done or achieved anything?
Why keep producing and repeating ideas, concepts and proposals but none of these has been effectively implemented.
The same goes for economic management, governance, and public service.
We have heard ad nauseam the need for Malaysia to remain competitive.
But where is it when policies are being changed and dished out without much thought and consideration?
The latest policy on Malaysia My Second Home is one example.
We talk about good governance, institutions put in place to provide checks and balance, and oversights by parliamentary committees, auditor general et cetera but then how do we explain the never-ending abuse and nonsense that are going on?
We talk and talk, but nothing gets done.
And what about the civil service? Have we decided on the size of the civil service yet? Is civil service a drain to the economy?
I believe there is a tipping point on everything beyond which there will be a point of no return.
If we just talk and talk and allow the situation to deteriorate, we will all be in tears someday.
A nation does not become a failed state or basket case overnight.
It is the persistent and obstinate ignoring of signs and writing on the wall.
Some are too smug to notice it. Some are too slow to see it. Some pretend not to see it.
