LETTER | A world in peril drowns New Year 2021

LETTER | Even as humans the world over were registering nervous smiles of hope as news of the Covid-19 vaccine started leaving laboratories, the breaking news of a mutant Wuhan strain spreading at 70 percent more speed is already casting a horrifying mood on planet earth.

With Christmas celebrations being suddenly shut down and all transborder flights and travel stalled till Dec 31 in Europe, leaves little to feel jubilant.

In this extreme and daunting climate of fears, many leaders are feeling helpless, undeniably.

We have no idea where all this is leading humanity to.

Will the global economy crash beyond expectations?

Will governments collapse, unable to tide the challenges?

Will society break loose out of desperation as hopelessness sweeps across the nations?

Should we even be reprimanded or ostracised for being pessimistic?

Against this canopy of reality sweeping the world, Malaysians have to also contend with the corruptions of mega scales that do not see any closures at the Palace of Justice.

In the midst of global fears escalating just when the announcement of vaccine supplies was making headlines, leaves Malaysians in a trapped corner.

But you also wonder how come 10,000 people saw it as a windfall to make a drive-through at a wedding and be rewarded with a parcel of a meal (nasi bungkus)?

While the world reels in abject uncertainty, 2021 could in all likelihood not bring the solace we struggled for helplessly all through 2020.

What will our history books capture for the next generation to read?

Your guess is as good as mine.

Indeed 2021 seems set to unfurl under a dark, gloomy sky of uncertainties and havoc.

For Malaysians, if only we had zero corruption. If only we had less of a gullible population.

What a relief to say goodbye to the Year 2020. But how do we welcome 2021?
