Extended Opportunity for Young Malaysian Filmmakers to Defend Digital Rights

EngageMedia has extended the application deadline for  Tech Tales Youth 2, offering young Malaysian filmmakers passionate about human rights and  online freedom of expression a chance to create impactful short films. Selected participants

will receive a production grant of up to USD 3,200 and participate in a digital rights mentorship  program.

Tech Tales Youth 2 builds upon the success of previous editions, including films that  highlighted pressing digital rights issues in Malaysia. One such film, "The Offensive Internet" by  Yih Wen Chen, explored the challenges faced by journalists and artists in Malaysia. It depicted  the experiences of South China Morning Post journalist Tashny Sukumaran and cartoonist  Zunar, who both faced legal repercussions for their work. This powerful film was screened at  various international festivals, including the 100% Manusiah Film Festival and the 20th  International Human Rights Film Festival in Argentina.

"We encourage young Malaysian filmmakers who are passionate about human rights to apply,"  says King Catoy, the project lead. "As a mentorship program about digital rights, the selected  film grantees will have a chance to learn about the crucial connection between human rights  and technology. The application process is straightforward - we're primarily interested in seeing  applicants' past works and their keen interest in learning about digital rights."

The project particularly welcomes applications from women, LGBTQ+ individuals, indigenous  youth, and other underrepresented communities, recognizing the importance of diverse  perspectives in addressing digital rights issues.
