COMMENT | Matriculation: What Anwar gets right and wrong

COMMENT | Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced on Sunday that students from all races who score 10As and above in Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) will be guaranteed a spot by the government in the matriculation programme.

Matriculation started in 1999 with the explicit purpose of increasing bumiputera enrolment in science, technology and professional courses. It provides students with a fast-track entry to public universities (one year compared to 1.5 years to complete STPM) in fully paid residential colleges compared to STPM.
