UEM Sunrise extends support to communities around Klang Valley in its Covid-19 Livelihood Assistance Programme

UEM Sunrise Berhad (“UEM Sunrise” or the “Company”), one of Malaysia’s leading property developers, together with Yayasan UEM, the philanthropic arm of UEM Group Berhad, carried out its Covid-19 Livelihood Assistance Programme, an outreach initiative to distribute essential provisions to underprivileged around Klang Valley who were impacted by the pandemic.

The programme is part of a collective humanitarian response and social initiatives led by GLC/GLIC Disaster Response Network (GDRN) coordinated by Yayasan Hasanah and Yayasan TM as joint-secretariat. The Perlindungan Ekonomi Dan Rakyat Malaysia (PERMAI) assistance package, is an initiative funded by the Ministry of Finance to combat Covid-19 and safeguard the people’s welfare which have been severely affected by the pandemic.

With the help of over 60 UEM Sunrise volunteers, the Company’s Covid-19 Livelihood Assistance Programme touched the lives of 1,000 families around Klang Valley – from the elderly in the old folks’ homes to the kids in orphanages as well as underprivileged families in various communities.

We remain committed to look out for and to provide assistance to the communities surrounding our developments, especially during these challenging times,” said UEM Sunrise Chief Executive Officer Sufian Abdullah.

As some travel restrictions eased with the Klang Valley being Phase 2 of the National Recovery Plan, the Company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) team as well as its volunteers have successfully distributed essential provisions which included rice, cooking oil, bed comforters, laundry detergent and toothbrushes at eight different locations in four consecutive weeks.

Their journey started at two nursing homes on 18 August – Pusat Jagaan Mahmudah in Bangi and Pusat Jagaan Nur Hasanah in Beranang where the team donated 35 sets of the essential provisions. The Company’s volunteers diligently adhered to SOPs during the handover process with the resident representatives to minimise the spread of Covid-19 among the most vulnerable members of the community.

A few days later on 21 August, the Company’s CSR team and volunteers, together with the sales team from Serene Heights, Bangi, rolled up their sleeves to arrange and distribute more essential goods at the Serene Heights Sales Gallery to the surrounding communities, benefitting around 400 families. SOPs were strictly observed as UEM Sunrise volunteers distributed the provisions via a “drive-through” concept where the items were loaded into the recipients’ cars by the team.

On 25 August, the team continued the programme by visiting the Rumah Titian Kasih, Jalan Duta where they handed out 25 packs of the essential goods to its residents. They then made their way to Persatuan Kebajikan Warga Tua & Kanak-Kanak Wilayah Persekutuan in Kepong and distributed another 25 packs.
Not forgetting the Orang Asal community, UEM Sunrise delivered 40 sets of the provisions to the Tok Batin of Kampung Orang Asal Bukit Lagong in Selayang which were then distributed to its villagers.

The following week on 4 September, UEM Sunrise partnered with Lembaga Zakat Selangor to provide relief to the underprivileged community surrounding Masjid Baitul Mahabbah in Seksyen 27, Shah Alam. Just like at the Serene Heights Sales Gallery, the team got down to business by organising and distributing 245 packs of the goods via the “drive-through” concept, without having the recipients leave their cars.

This contribution can go a long way, especially for families who are in dire straits and I hope that more corporate organisations can also look around their areas of influence and reach out to the communities in need. Though the economy is slowly opening up, there are still Malaysians who need that extra help and it's our responsibility to identify them and give them a hand," said Hasan Basri, caretaker of the Rumah Titian Kasih in Kuala Lumpur.

UEM Sunrise CSR team and its volunteers wrapped up the programme at their last stop, Surau Ar Rayyan in Precinct 6, Putrajaya on 11 September. The team collaborated with Pusat Pungutan Zakat Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur and assisted in organising the essential goods to be given out to 230 families in the area.

UEM Sunrise previously organised six CSR programmes since early this year including distributing essential items to the Kampung Orang Asal Simpang Arang in Gelang Patah, Johor, cash contribution to the Pertubuhan Nur Kasih Bestari Orphanage in Kajang, Selangor in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri and the Chinese New Year contributions to the Persatuan Kebajikan Orang Tua Ceria in Johor.
