Glutathione: our body’s defence against severe inflammatory response triggered by Covid-19

As Covid-19 continues to spread throughout the globe, positive news of vaccines potentially being rolled out as early as the year-end brings much needed hope and cheer. Meanwhile, we are called to stay vigilant and adhere to the SOPs (standard operating procedures) laid down by the authorities. More knowledge on how to minimise the effects of Covid-19, should we catch it, would not hurt either.

There have been numerous researches on Covid-19 prevention and treatment, and many hypotheses have been put forth. Some scientists concluded that the relationship between risk factors and serious manifestations and death in Covid-19 patients could be attributable to a common cause – glutathione deficiency (e.g. read it here and here).

What is glutathione?

Glutathione (pronounced "gloo tuh thai own") is a tripeptide – i.e. a tiny protein composed of three amino acids: cysteine, glycine, and glutamic acid (or glutamate). It is hailed as the mother of all antioxidants and the most efficient detoxifier. Often called the “master” antioxidant, glutathione also boosts the utilisation and recycling of other antioxidants in our body, namely vitamins C and E, alpha-lipoic acid, and CoQ10. Our immune system depends on a steady supply of glutathione.

The good news is our body makes its own glutathione. All living organism on earth has some glutathione in its cells. The bad news is that poor diet, pollution, toxins, medications, stress, trauma, aging, infections and radiation all deplete our glutathione levels.

What are the benefits of Glutathione?

Glutathione does not only help in skin lightening and anti-ageing, but also helps in fighting against oxidative stress. Glutathione also plays an important role in immune function, by stimulating natural killer (NK) cell function and promoting healthy function of T-cells and other white blood cells. Other than that, glutathione also helps to relieve the symptoms of hormone imbalance (including PMS and hot flashes), mood disorders like depression and anxiety, inflammation, sleep disturbances, low libido, and weight gain.

What happens when a person has glutathione deficiency?

People with a low level of glutathione in the body have a high risk of developing:

  • Neurodegenerative diseases – Parkinson’s Disease and Alzheimer’s Disease

  • Pulmonary diseases

  • Immune diseases (autoimmune)

  • Cardiovascular diseases

  • Age-related diseases.

How do we boost the glutathione level in our body?

Limit toxin exposure. Eat foods rich in glutathione, such as spinach, avocados, asparagus and okra. Be active. Consider supplements.

In the past, the only effective way to supplement glutathione levels was through intravenous (IV) treatments once a week – but the associated high cost and hassle made this an unrealistic option as a preventative measure against disease. Now, one of the best ways to enhance glutathione levels is through the supplementation of glutathione precursors.
